Wrecks and Caves on Elba

There are many findings of wrecks to ‘Elba Island, having always been a must for all shipping routes to the western Mediterranean, rich in well-protected natural shelters but also dangerous shoals and steep cliffs, the Elba has provided over the years a lot of archaeological material underwater discovery, often the result of isolated discoveries, but sometimes part of important wrecks on Elba.

Plan of the wrecks on the island of Elba

The wrecks of the island of Elba, despite the looting that the mass diffusion of underwater sports has caused, a lot of material has been saved, thanks above all to the intervention of individual enthusiasts, among which A. Pederzini, of the Institute of Ligurian Studies, the honorary inspector of the Superintendency G. Brambilla and local scholars, to whom N. Lamboglia gave homogeneity and methodological rigor for a certain period with his Experimental Center of Underwater Archeology. This intervention led in 1974 to the drafting of an accurate and extensive archaeological map of the coasts with the wrecks of the island of Elba, with the reporting of over sixty points of discovery, of which at least twenty part of wrecks. The list of findings presented here, far more succinct than that, is based on the material currently existing and preserved in the various archaeological deposits of the island; the material was almost entirely covered by the filing campaign of the Archaeological Superintendency of Tuscany, with the collaboration of young graduates from the University of Pisa.
