Church of Sant’Ilario

The church of Sant’Ilario is inserted in the walls of the Pisan fortifications, with a unique bell tower with a pentagonal base. Originally with a single nave, the building was enlarged at the end of the 17th century with two side aisles. The baroque façade corresponds to the interior, which in the middle of the 18th century saw the construction of the altar of the Madonna dei Sette Dolori. The recent frescos are by Eugenio Allori from Elba.

Church of the Holy Trinity – Chapel of the Souls in Purgatory

Among the churches and altars that were built in the eighteenth century, there is the church of the SS. Trinity in Sant’llario , commissioned by Don Simone Costa, a native of Marciana and spiritual treasurer of the Parish of Populonia, who in 1740 wanted to build in the middle of the land he owned in the countryside of Sant’Ilario.

The chapel of the Holy Trinity was built on a huge granite boulder along the old road that connected La Pila to Sant’llario, called La Scorcia.

Tower of San Giovanni in Sant Ilario for maritime control

The Tower of San Giovanni previously called: Torra, Torretta or Tower of the Regina, takes its new name from the nearby church of San Giovanni that we find a few meters ahead. It is thought to have been built in the eleventh century by the Republic of Pisa. The tower was built on a huge granite boulder in the locality Morota, not far from Sant Ilario, at an altitude of 350m, in a dominant position over the entire Gulf of Marina di Campo, with the aim of controlling the maritime traffic of this area.
