Procchio, a tourist town in the center of the island, is located in a beautiful gulf and has several of the most beautiful beaches on Elba (Procchio beach, Spartaia, Paolina and the Guardiola), and a crystalline sea, considered together with Pomonte among the best national. Despite being a small town, it boasts a covered square, where live music is often played in the evening, and an equipped park, the place for numerous summer parties. There are many hotels, villas and apartments spread across a vast area of green countryside. There are various services that we find on the beach.
The beach of Procchio
The beach of Procchio is among the most beautiful on the island of Elba, the sand is fine and golden, when winds blow from the south the blue and transparent color of the sea is enhanced, the seabed slopes gently, ideal for children. The beach is long and wide, we find various bathing establishments interspersed with stretches of free beach. The sunsets over the sea in the gulf of Procchio are fascinating, admirable from the east side of the beach.
Mountain Castello for the control of the Procchio Bay
The modest hill of Mountain Castello, immediately behind the bay of Procchio, which overlooks the northern coast of the Island of Elba and occupies a strategic position for the control of the opposing inlets, dominating the Gulf of Pocchio to the north and the plain of Marina di Campo to the south.
On the top of the hill the remains of the imposing walls in granite blocks, which signal the historical presence of the fortress.
The Procchio Wreck
In 1967 a storm brought to light the remains of a small Roman cargo ship in good condition. The Wreck of Procchio , was located a few meters deep, (currently not visible because it is covered with sand) on a sandy bottom near Campo all’Aia.

In the 1969 survey, an exceptionally preserved hull was found for a length of approximately 16 metres. The ship, which must have measured about twenty meters intact, was probably a small coastal transport vessel, with a single mast on which to hoist a square sail. The presence of the wreck had long been known to the local inhabitants, who recovered the sulfur cakes for the vineyards.
Procchio Cipollino Marble
The quarry work on Elba did not have to be limited only to the excavation of the granite. Another stone resource is the Cipollino Marble extracted in Procchio, a kind of veined marble, unsuitable for making statues, with streaks of color ranging from green light to dark green streaked with black.
The presence of cipollino marble in the residences already abandoned at the end of the 1st century AD leads to the hypothesis that its use, at least at a local level, was prior to the exploitation of granite.
The quarries
The quarries were probably located between the western cove of the Gulf of Procchio and the eastern edge of the Paolina beach. Some remains of columns remain in the locality of La Guardiola and in the Agnone cove as evidence of the exploitation.
