Church of Sant’Ilario

Description of the Church of Sant’Ilario

The church of Sant’Ilario is inserted in the walls of the Pisan fortifications, with a singular bell tower with a pentagonal base. Originally with a single nave, the building was enlarged at the end of the 17th century. with the two aisles. The interior corresponds to the Baroque façade, which in the mid-1700s saw the construction of the altar of the Madonna of the Seven Sorrows and in 1874 that of the chapel of the Heart of Mary, adorned with the wooden statue by Antonio Rossi. Also in this church we find in the paintings the typical iconography of the souls in Purgatory and that of the saints who contemplate a picture of the “Virgin and Child”. The recent frescoes are by Eugenio Allori from Elba.

The Castle Church of Sant’Ilario

Almost certainly the castle is of medieval origin and probably dated 1100, when the Pisans, had already become ow island, and had brought the exploitation of the raw materials that were abundant in Elba to its maximum development. On the eastern side, iron ore, and in the Western part, granite that was eventually used for the Baptistery and the Duomo of Pisa.. But the church, although very modest, may be of an earlier period than the village and therefore gave its name to the village. In the brief life of the saint, we can recall a long journey back to Gallia, passing by the Tyrrhenian islands, the memory of this passage probably gave the inspiration to build a church dedicated to the saint.

The Parish of Sant’Ilario

The life of Sant’llario was very prosperous in the last two centuries and reached its apogee in the eighteenth century also due to the beneficial influence that Saint Paul of the Cross exercised there with his apostolic preachings, accompanied by wonders. The Gori family stood out for the number of priests, churches and existing benefices. In 1745 the priest Gian Domenico Gori, in the locality called “La Lammia”, had the public oratory of San Pietro Martire built, and with his goods he formed the endowment. In the Parish Church the two brothers Don Simone and Don Erasmo Gori, on 9 July 1765, erected and endowed the altar of the Madonna dei Sette Dolori; in 1874 two other Gori brothers, Giacomo and Francesco, built and endowed the Chapel of the Heart of Mary, enriching it with an artistic wooden statue sculpted by Antonio Rossi of Siena. In 1912, thanks to the commitment of the parish priest Don Teodoro Mannucci, the church of Sant’Ilario was totally restored and decorated. Other small churches and altars arose in Sant’llario in the eighteenth century. Don Simone Costa, a native of Marciana and spiritual bursar of the Parish of Populonia, wanted in 1740, in the midst of the land he owned in the Sant’llario countryside, to build the public oratory of SS. Trinità, along the ancient road between La Pila and Sant’llario.

The Church of Ilario built on a huge boulder

The chapel was built on a huge granite boulder with a small atrium which gave the building the shape of a tau and a characteristic appearance, which could have been preserved with little. The Oratory of San Martino alla Pila, where Holy Mass was celebrated weekly (no longer today), was built in 1752 by Antonio Pazzaglia. The Santilaresi oratories of San Francesco Saverio, under the Calanche, and of the Madonna del Carmine, in the middle of the town, date back to before the eighteenth century. Even older is that of San Rocco, whose income was, in 1846, combined with the parish benefit of S.Lucia, near La Pila. Saint Francis Xavier and Saint Lucia had a small hermitage annexed. Today some oratories are ruins and the few that remain are completely abandoned, with the exception of that of S. Rocco.
