Elba Memory Archive project promoted by the Elba Island Foundation
The Elba Memory Archive is an ambitious project promoted by the Fondazione Isola d’Elba, a tireless facilitator of initiatives that enhance the cultural heritage and identity of the Isola d’Elba. This project, realized thanks to a call for proposals from the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan), aims to strengthen the identity of the island community through the sharing of a collective memory made of images and information.
Over 1300 ancient Elban images digitized
At www.archiviomemoriaelbana.it it is now possible to consult the first nucleus of over 1300 digitalized images, a sort of large family album extended to the entire Island, navigable on a platform developed by Promemoria, a leading company in the world of heritage, historical archives and their valorization.
Faded images, ancient portraits, identical or almost unrecognizable landscapes, often without a name or a date, began to reveal themselves, almost to come back to life, when the voices of those who kept them told the details, rescuing them from oblivion by telling old stories, varied and fascinating, of the people, families, countries, traditions of the Island.
We must thank the donors of memory, those who wanted to share their heritage of images, often precious. Among these, the Giuseppe M Battaglini collection, 33 glass plates of extraordinary quality, the Valeria Paoletti collection with the personal album of a character of the caliber of Ubaldo Tonietti, the prestigious Daniele Olschki collection with splendid shots of the Roster Olschki family from the 1920s and paintings by Lloyd.
The Elba Memory Archive uses an APP, accessible at the same address, with ten thematic routes with numerous stops, a time machine that catapults us into a not so distant past and allows us to explore the territory through period images.
The ADME has also started a stimulating collaboration with the ITCG Cerboni of Portoferraio which has returned remakes and restorations of historical photographs from the Archive carried out by the third year students of the graphics section which have added a precious contemporary dimension to this collection of memories.
The project “Elban Memory Archive”, from an idea by Patrizia Lupi, was created by the Fondazione Isola d’Elba, funded by the European Union NextGenerationUE and the Ministry of Culture for the digital transition of cultural and creative organizations – PNRR M1C3 Decree 385 of 19/10/22. TOCC0002740.
