“Change of Course” the July and August program
The Cambio di Rotta project does not stop in the summer but moves ashore in the months of July and August for a series of events that see the project’s partners and supporters engaged in a series of initiatives and meetings on the theme of the culture of the sea and navigation.
Following the sea trips in June, coordinated by the Portoferraio Naval League, with boats from the Exodus La Mammoletta Foundation hosting the ISIS Foresi and ITGC Cerboni high schools, which received enthusiastic support from students who participated in sailing lessons and sea trials, other organizations are now involved in the activities in various towns on Elba. In Campo, two evenings were held in collaboration with the Municipal Administration to discuss maritime literature and the project’s objectives.
Change of Course and the brigantine Pandora
In Portoferraio, on the occasion of the visit of the brigantine Pandora of the Ligurian association Vela Tradizione asd which hosts young people with disabilities for a summer cruise, it will be possible to visit the beautiful vessel and discuss the themes of accessibility, inclusion, slow tourism and the value of going to sea for the education of young people who take on very specific responsibilities and roles on board.
In August, two other important partners come into play: the Port Authority of Portoferraio, which, thanks to the kind availability of Commander Floriana Segreto, opens the gates of its gardens for stargazing with the Elbani Amateur Astronomers Association, recounting ancient navigation techniques, and the Marciana Marina Sailing Club, which will host a meeting at its headquarters with Professor Duccio Cavalieri, author of the book “Will microbes save the world?”
Changing Course: Journeys into Awareness by Sea
The project “Changing course: paths in awareness by sea” is funded under the call for proposals “You are present. Youth and associations. Ed 2025” promoted by CESVOT and financed by the Tuscany Region-Giovanisì, in agreement with the Department for Youth Policies and Universal Civil Service with the contribution of the Livorno Foundation. The Elba Island Foundation is the leader – conceived and coordinated by Director Patrizia Lupi – together with 22 other public and private entities on Elba, starting with the Port Authority of Portoferraio, the USL Toscana Nord Elba district area and UF SerD, the Portoferraio Naval League, the Marciana Marina Sailing Club, the Pro Loco of Portoferraio, Capoliveri and Porto Azzurro, the Arca and LINC Social Cooperatives, Incontriamoci in Diversi APS, Tip Tap One ASD, the Club del Mare di Campo, Auser odv, Dialogo odv, the Elba Amateur Astronomers Association, Elba Officinale Aps, Elba del Vicino di Rio, ASD Vela Tradizionale, the Portoferraio Artists’ Circle, SIMTUR with Enjoy Elba Magazine, Infoelba, Generazione Mare, Associazione Territorio Italia, Igiene Service srl, Locman SpA.
The Mammoletta boys “Change of Course” on the Mamboo
In addition to the activities on land and on board the Pandora, the calendar also includes the use of the vessels of the Exodus La Mammoletta Foundation in the coming months: the Bamboo, a Baltic 51 sloop of approximately 16 meters and the Maria Teresa, Hallberg-Rassy 49, a cutter of approximately 15 meters, to accompany the young people and ETS of Elba in the discovery of their island by looking at it from the sea. The title of the project is emblematic, taking inspiration from the experience of the young people of the Mammoletta who are a testimony to how a “change of direction” is possible when facing navigation, both at sea and in life, counting on the help of others and on the skills and commitment of everyone.
