Tourist itineraries in Portoferraio

Portoferraio is the largest town on the whole island and also the one that offers various tourist itineraries as it is the town with the largest number of monuments. We have described the visit to Fort Falcone, Fort Stella and Villa dei Mulini. The Forts are located on the two hills above the historic center, the Villa is located between the two, as can be seen from the photo of Portoferraio.

We begin our tour with Fort Falcone which has many gates, but the one open to the public is located in Via Guerrazzi. The Fort was built in 1548 by the Medici in defense of the constant pirate attacks. Its large interior is made up of terraces, connected to each other by numerous stairs and underpasses. The very imposing walls surround the entire ancient center of Portoferraio, as can be seen from the photos. Thanks to its height we can see the whole town and the surrounding area.

Fort Stella

Once the visit is over, we go in the direction of Fort Stella already identified by Fort Falcone for its pink color and its dominion over the bay, being located on second hill of Portoferraio. It was built in the same year as the Falcone and for the same defense purposes. From the privileged position of the small fortress, the view extends from the garden of the Villa dei Mulini, to the harbor and the entire historic centre.

Napoleon Villa of the Mulini in Portoferraio

We go out, travel 150 m and find ourselves at the Villa dei Mulini where Napoleon stayed in 1814-1815, it is the most sought after tourist itinerary in Portoferraio, Inside the villa we find numerous objects belonging to Napoleon and characteristic of the period, the garden and the view of the cliff are beautiful.
