BIRTH OF THE PERTINI CIRCLE OF THE ISLAND OF ELBA
Elba Pertini Circle of the Island the activism around the figure of Sandro Pertini was born after a meeting of a school from Portoferraio with the President of the Republic, which took place in 1984, at the Quirinale. Two classes of the Pascoli middle school reached Rome, led by the late headmaster Bruno Bolano. On that occasion, Sandro Pertini reminded us of his imprisonment in the tower of the Linguella and in Pianosa, because he was anti-fascist and told anecdotes about that hard experience.

IN 1933 AND 1935 PERTINI THE FUTURE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC SOSTED AT ELBA IN THE MEDICEA TOWER OF PORTOFERRAIO, AS A POLITICIAN
Sandro Pertini anti-fascist, in 1926, fled to France to avoid the persecution of Mussolini, but on his return he was captured and sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment by the special court for the defense of the state in 1929. After other prisons, he arrived in Pianosa , prison-sanatorium, was 11 November 1931 and Stella’s lawyer was also treated for his tuberculosis. He remained until 9 September 1935 and at the end of his detention, destined for confinement for another 10 years on the island of Ponza, he stopped for the third time in the cell located in the octagonal Medici tower. Pertini came from Pianosa two more times in 1933, because he was tried for insulting a prison guard. The first hearing took place around 21 September of that year, which was then postponed.
Then he returned for the trial on November 9 and the Pretore Odorisio arranged to proceed behind closed doors, believing that the trial had aroused a “reprehensible curiosity in the public”. Many Elbans had flocked in large numbers, a sign of solidarity. The sentence was, of course, another 9 months and 24 days of detention. Sandro Pertini was 36 years old at the time and his prison file declared him “an exalted subversive, who must be carefully monitored.” In reality it was he, a political prisoner, who was mistreated, along with other cellmates at Elba , from the Cuttano guard, and had only the wrong to rebel against these abuses and retaliated against him.

Centenary of the birth of Sandro Pertini “School day”

On the occasion of the centenary of Sandro Pertini’s birth, as part of the “School Day”, an island school event was carried out in agreement with the Municipality of Portoferraio , and the work of art exhibited here was created near the Pertini tower. The mayor Giovanni Fratini held a presentation ceremony for the painting that he had commissioned from the Portoferraio artist Italo Bolano.
The figure of the late President of the Republic was traced by Admiral Mario Porta, former commander of the General Staff, and in the Cathedral of the city a concert was held with the school groups led by the Portoferraio tenor Renato Cioni, at the time partner of Maria Callo. The work expresses, with Bolano’s abstract expressionism, in this case also figurative, precisely the imprisonment of Pertini. A work in ceramic and steel with which the symbols of detention and the ideas of social justice always pursued by the socialist, who would later become President of the Republic, are represented. Bolano is an established artist in Italy and abroad and has a museum-laboratory in San Martino, near the Napoleonic country residence, called the “International Ad Center”.
